DC Direct Boxed Set Ad - 2000

sg
DC Direct's graphic designers are really top-notch; as good as the toys themselves are, I find the packaging and ads to be just as visually compelling.

This ad for the Aquaman and Aqualad boxed set is no exception, its really a thing of beauty--nice use of colors, well balanced, and there's a lot of text on there and yet it doesn't look crowded.

Nicely done, fellas!

I could just imagine what it's like working in that shop, the reference and artwork at your disposal.

I've been looking for this set recently, I should have picked it up when it came out, doh!

I wrote the copy for that ad (and the box)! That was a good set; I had one, still boxed, in my office at DC but it seems to have gone the way of all the lost socks between my leaving DC and the flood we had here last year.

I bought mine impulsively based on that packaging alone.

A really run set but eventually I was forced to purge all new collectibles....

A very nice ad indeed, but I'm not a fan of that Aquaman figure. He's a bit too....willowy, of all things.

I bought this when it came out. I love me some Silver Age, so this was a no-brainer for me. While I like the set itself, the figures look a bit odd when separated. What I mean is that Aquaman looks a bit too smiley when you see just that figure by itself. It actually sort of creeps me out.

So I recommend you keep the figures together with their mounts. And then hope no one makes "Ambiguously Gay Duo" jokes. :)

Speaking of Ace and Gary...back when these were available, I bought two sets with the intention of customizing one set as our favorite Ambiguously Gay Duo, but I never had the heart to go through with my plan.

As the person who designed that poster --thanks! (I did the product packaging for this, as well, which was great fun.)
