DC Stick-Ons Ad - 1974

sg
This ad (and another, half-page version) ran in approximately a billion DC comics in the mid-1970s--for a measly $2.50, you could get a set of superhero stick-ons featuring all of DC's biggest stars!

Most of them use the iconic stock art you've seen on other products of the time, like Murphy Anderson's Aquaman, Neal Adams' Batman, and Gil Kane's Green Lantern. Nice to see Hawkman represented, who you didn't see all that much on the merchandising of the time.

The thing I love most about the ad is where you can supposedly put these stickers--yeah, your Mom would've just loved it if she came home to find a wall in her living room covered in DC superhero stickers, leaving a wonderful residue on the wallpaper.

And not to be out done, your Dad will love driving to work with a Neal Adams Green Arrow stuck to his driver's side door!

Between Hostess snacks that made you fat, X-ray specs that gave you a headache, and superhero sticks ons ruining your parents' stuff, I'm a little shocked we made it out of the 70s at all.

I ordered these in the day, and they were AWESOME! The only complaint I had was that they came folded up in some package, so Supergirl had this "fold" on her that never went away. After I ordered one set and used them all up (on notebooks and the cardboard boxes I kept my comis in at the time) I ordered another set just to have....but they were sold out. :-( I kept the Aquaman sticker, though, for years...it was that awesome Murphy Anderson "rolling" iconic pose in full color, at about 10 inches diameter. It was great.

I always wanted these, but never had them.

I'd never thought about how absurd the ad was before. You nailed it Rob!

Don't forget the Sea Monkeys! The accursed Sea Monkeys are responsible for the water crisis back in the 70's.

I actually have a mint copy of the Aquaman sticker a (really great) friend gave me a few months back. Man, what I wouldn't do for a set of these...see 'em on Ebay every now and then.

Wow...these are cool! I remember as a kid my brother & I asked our mother if we can have them. She said it was ok but instead of sticking them on our new bedroom panel wall
we stuck them to colorful construction paper then tack them to the wall.
I had Aquaman over the head of my bed & my brother had Flash. the rest we scattered through out our bedroom.
