DC Spotlight #1 - 1986

sgDC Spotlight was a giveaway comic they released in 1986 featuring previews of their upcoming titles. Why they didn't just continue with the DC Sampler series, I don't know.

The book is extraordinarily hard to find, and this cover scan is the closest I've been able to come. Inside apparently is a preview of Watchmen, the very first appearance of the characters, making this book go for very high prices($50 and up) whenever it does surface on eBay.

No one I know has a copy, so while I assume there's a preview for the 1986 Aquaman mini inside(since he's there on the cover, wearing his rarely-seen-outside-the-mini camo suit!), I don't know that for a fact. But I'd love to find out some day.

The cover is by Jose Luis Garcia Lopez, which = awesome. The stars of the DC look so happy, including the normally stoic Martian Manhunter.

sgToday's (Also) The Day! According to the self-same
1976 DC Comics Calendar that we talked about on Tuesday, today is Mera's birthday!

This artwork is from the issue where Aquaman and Mera wed, drawn by Nick Cardy, and, I gotta say--Nick got away with making Mera way hotter than the motherly women you normally saw in comics at the time.

Happy Birthday Mera!

I normally have not liked any of the changes in the costumes that Aquaman wore. However, this blue one is one that I always did like.
Also, happy birthday Mera!

Cool cover! Never even heard of this book before. Thanks Rob.
And I do agree with Rick The blue costume was very cool. I wish they'd kept it.

Wow, the Queen is looking particularly - pneumatic? - there!

Of course, she IS underwater... or maybe just borrowed one of Powergirl's bras?

That's odd. I'm pretty sure I have a copy of this, and I'm equally sure I got it out of a 25 cent bin... Now I'm going to have to dig out my copy and check.

ok, calming down.

the reason i'm dying to see inside the thing is so frequently the DC Sampler used new or specially-made art to promote the books, so i'm hoping that DC Spotlight features unseen (to my eyes) Craig Hamilton art for the mini.

i loves me da Craig Hamilton art.

You know, everyone is so fond of that blue suit, but I just don't get it. I find it rather ugly, but I suppose it's just a matter of opinion.

I do love what you observed, though Rob, that all of these DC characters looks so happy. Imagine that, heroes who are happy....

Happy Birthday Mera! Long live the Queen!

As for the Spotlight... Nice cover except for Firestorm's jumping jacks/ripping a fart while flying thing going on there…What is that?

I never knew of this book before. I've managed to pick up the Samplers over the years. The artwork alone is usually worth the buck you have to pay for them.

The only comic artist who may compete with Nick Cardy for most beautiful women is John Romita. That's a close one. They both definitely knew how to draw them redheads!
