I thought we'd kick the week off with this totally awesome sketch, done for me by Michael Avon Oeming when he made an appearance at my totally awesome comics store, All Things Fun, back in December 2006.
I love how damn simple it is--this sketch probably features the fewest amount of actual lines than any other in the book--yet it has all the majesty and the power that befits Aquaman. That fist has Black Manta's name all over it!
I feel like this should be presentation art for Aquaman: The Animated Series or something.

Man......Aquaman: The Animated series....I have dreams about things like that. This would be pretty freakin' awesome art for it.

Have you ever stopped and thought just how much Bruce Timm's animated style influenced comic and commercial art? It boggles the mind.
This is a fine example of it...and a fine sketch!

You know, this one doesn't really seem all that Timm-ish...which is a good thing, I think. The Timm-verse stuff was absolutely incredible, but the overly stylized artistic approach is something I was never that big a fan of, although I understand its necessity.
See, Oeming's stuff often looks like lukewarm Timm stuff, but not here. Not only is the image fantastic and distinctive, but he managed to draw a pissed-off Aquaman that in no way recalls Namor. He's his own man here, and man does he own.
