School Supplies Ad - 1977

sgThis ad(drawn by Joe Kubert, no less!) was in a 1977 issue of Justice League of America, and it was the kind of thing that made me positively ache from seeing all this cool stuff, even if there was zero chance I'd ever bring any of it to school.

(btw, what magical land does this school reside in, where all the kids--even the girls--have superhero backpacks and none of them are getting beaten up?)

I have that awesome pencil case(in fact, its the earliest piece of Aqua-Merch I can remember having), but I've never seen that ruler with all the superhero heads on it and I want it so bad!

I know there was an Aquaman spiral/"theme" notebook, and there wasn't a sharpener, but I'm not sure about the other stuff--most of it seemed to be limited to the Big Three and occasionally Shazam!, but you never know...

Also, I love the order form--"I'm waiting! Send me immediately!"--they knew their audience.

AquaPolling Question: Ever since I started really looking for them, I've found a lot of these cool-type ads, enough to do a theme week(or two). What do you AquaFans prefer to see--a whole week on one subject(ads, sketches, stock art) or stuff all mixed together?

I've never seen that ruler either. I wonder who's heads are on there...

See, I had a seperate identity going to school. I could gear up with geekfest supplies, but I could "throw down" with the best of them. I could have put into effect a "beat downs for NOT wearing superhero stuff" rule, but it wasn't worth it. I could never get a backpack of one of my absolute faves anyway.

Although I did just see Red Tornado on one.

I like the occasional theme week myself.

That ruler would be the coolest. I would have lked to have seen a backpack too, but oh well.

I am hoping they come out with an Aquaman version of those padlocks they are currently selling.

Heh-heh.....I HAVE that ruler. :-) I'll go home and check out who was on it besides Aquaman. Funny thing: his head was the Dick Dillin (?) version from circa JLA 86 or so, not the more well-known Neal Adams version. I remember Plastic Man and Shazam were also on it. I also had a mini-spiral and a pocket folder, but I never saw the pencil bag. I would have liked to have gotten that.

someone helpful FOAMer has sent me a scan of the ruler, so it will show up here soon! :)

I remember being dragged into a stationary store thinking it would be dull, instead it was filled with this stuff, I'll never forget it.

I wish I still had my Batman pencil sharpener.

I remember having a spiral notebook (or was it a folder) with Aquaman riding a huge pink sea horse. The backround was in shades of green with sort of a wave like motiff. I remember that I tore the cover off the notebook (folder?) after the school year was over and thumb-tacked it to my wall.

the folder was one of the first things i posted:

...i still have yet to find the notebook, ever. weird!

Marvel had some pretty cool folders as well. I had the Captain America one (naturally) which used the cover of Cap 193. Heck, I even had Incredible Hulk swimming trunks back in the day and wore them every time I went swimming. Wonder how I didn't get beat up.

The ruler features the following characters: Neal Adams (NA) Hawkman, Infantino Batgirl, Beck Capt Marvel, Plastic Man, NA Batman, NA Superman, Infantino Robin, NA Flash, Wonder Woman (by Sekowsky?), NA Green Arrow, NA Green Lantern, and and Dick Dillin (or is it Murphy Anderson?) Aquaman. It's a totally awesome ruler and I used it for years.

Neal, I had a loose leaf binder decorated with the cover to Cap #193! Don't remember how old I was when I had it, though. If it came out at the same time as the DC school supplies picture here I would've been 10 going on 11.
