Ocean Master Who's Who Entry - 1986

sg

A few hours after I posted yesterday's Aquaman entry in Who's Who, I got an email from Craig Hamilton reminding me that he did the art for the Ocean Master one, and since he "loves getting mentioned on the Shrine" he's looking forward to its eventual inclusion.

Well, your wish is my command, Craig! I have all the Who's Who pages featuring members of the AquaFamily, and I had planned on running this later, but now's a good as time as any.

As is SOP for Craig, he really brought it with this illustration, cramming in an amazing amount of detail, atmosphere, and even characterization in a tiny space. He manages to make Ocean Master look badass, which is hard to do when you've got a silly face mask, purple leggings, and you call yourself Ocean Master.

I never bought the Who's Who Series but the entries you have showed are very good. I guess the artist had room to finally show off the characters they way they should.

Ooh, I had forgotten this one looked so down-right frightening! Really good use of the background colors, too. Hats off to Mr. Hamilton again! BTW, I never did understand why OM wore purple, though. If you call yourself Ocean Master, wouldn't you wear blue or green?? Oh, well....things that make you go hmmmm.

I always loved this piece. The transformation from Orm, to old Ocean Master, to new, horrific Ocean Master was just flat out awesome, and pretty much told you what you needed to know about the entry right there.

Fantastic work, Mr. Hamilton, as always! Thanks!

Chris

I think Purple is a standard villain colour in the DC U,it's the law, you have to wear it in order to be evil.

thats true about the purple (Luthor, Joker), but i guess the skin-tight leggings doesnt read "fearsome" to me--feels more "Shakespeare In the Park cast member"-ish to me.

Holy Cow! That does look scary, except for the noted purple leggings of course.

Doesn't purple represent the color of death in some countries?

I loved this entry as well ( as well as everything else I have seen from Mr. H), but the thing I was really taken by was his version of Orms helmet! Man that gave me the creeps me as a kid. Almost like he was wearing some weird mutated exo-skull Honestly, I never gave the purple leggings a second thought.

Ocean Master is the master of the ocean. Therefore, he wears the color of royalty-- purple. Also, mask aside, he's always looked cooler than every major Silver Age DC villain after Black Manta. Prison or jumpsuit Luthor? Pink unitard Brainiac? The question mark around the Riddler's package? Poison Ivy wears leaves people!!! RESPECT AQUAMAN'S ROGUES. Well-- those two anyway. The Fisherman is never going to reel 'em in *ba-dump-bump-pish*

Say, did Rob ever post Hamilton's painted PAD-pirate-era Aquaman poster? The one where he standing on the rocks with his one good hand at his hip? I had that framed on my wall for years! I wonder if I still have it...

no, that cool-o poster pretty much the only piece of CH Aquaman merch i dont have. it rarely shows up on ebay, for some reason.

Some reason? I'll tell you what reason:

Sweeeeeeeeet!!!!!

Mine isn't here at the house, so it's either in storage or got sold when I had my shop. Sadly, "private collection" is a pretty meaningless term when you've got means to money lying around...
