Aqualad/Aquagirl Who's Who Entry - 1985

sg

Jeez, in the very first issue of Who's Who, DC was already breaking the rules of the alphabet--AquaGirl should come before AquaLad, fellas!

Anyway, I thought it was a nice, cute touch to make this one piece, and of course you can't go wrong with George Perez when you need a lot of information in a small amount of space.

Unfortunately, DC had subjected this first issue to the grand experiment that was the Flexographic printing process(sold to DC by Halliburton, no doubt), and as you can see that worked out just great here--both Garth and Tula look like they're suffering from the heartbreak of
Psoriasis.

Luckily, the
Aquaman entry escaped such a fate, and by issue #3 DC had abandoned the process, noting at the time Who's Who was deemed "too important" to be used as an experiment. And how!

Although this is a great piece of Perez art, I felt like Garth got the shaft. He had enough history and importance in the DCU to get a page of his own. Tula should have filled out a half page with someone else.

It took DC a while to figure out who should get a whole page, or even two pages. Remember the first Batman entry. A teeny-tiny Dick Giordano drawing surrounded by text!

Who in the world thought Flexographic worked? Did DC pick up that god-awful coloring from Charlton when they bought their characters?

DC would be so smart to take another stab at this series!

Funny (odd, funny, not haha) you should mention psoriasis and Perez in the same post, as that kept him off the convention circuit a few years back.

Truly, this series is a gem. Thanks for sharing again, Rob!

Well, they seem to be bringing the Secret Files & Origins series back from limbo with GL:Sinestro Corps, as if that wasn't just a sad substitute to begin with...

REALLY? i never heard that. jeez, i hope nobody takes my joke as one directed at Perez's expense. that's a weird coincidence.

I always wondered why some characters had that weird look. Didn't know it was due to a different printing. I just thought it was they were drawn that way.
