Super Friends Stock Art by Kurt Schaffenberger

sgThis is an unusual piece of stock art, since this time its by Kurt Schaffenberger, who you didn't see too much on the merchandise, even though he had a solid, very family-friendly style.

And as you can see, this was another one of those pieces(like one we saw on the Superman Gift Set) that incorporated Flash, Green Lantern, Green Arrow, and Batgirl into the Super Friends family!

My only nerdly quibble: shouldn't Aquaman, being an essential element of the show, be further up, just behind Robin?

This always struck me as an odd piece of artwork. Notice the "dead space" between Superman and Batman, and the way the logo just sort of sits there being very non-dynamic. Not one of my favorite pieces of art, even though it features all my favorite characters...

An edited version of this artwork was used in the first (and only) Super Powers newsletter you received as a member of the Super Powers Fan Club. You could join by sending in points from Super Powers figure packages.

I always dug Schaffenberger, but I never liked his Batman. Too lumpy, and totally non-mysterious. Even the Super Friends toon Batman had a higher coolness factor.

I agree with you Chris, his Batman looked downright dorky.

Any chance that was inked by someone else? Doesn't look like "Pure Schaff..."

As for his inker, it looks somewhat like Dave Hunt....IMO

Schaffenberger did a great Robin though! I wish more Schaffenberger Aquaman existed, my fav is probably that old comic from Lois Lane where she was turned into a mermaid. Any other significant Schaffenberger Aquaman stories? I am guessing the Super Friends series is the other place to look.

It does look like Dave Hunt inked that. Schaffenberger was teamed with some great and not-so-great inkers over the years. Hunt was fairly good and consistent.

Good call on Dave Hunt. Hunt seemed to channel both Curt Swan and Kurt Schaffenberger. He sometimes added their influence to other pencilers!
