Splash Page Saturday: Aquaman Sword of Atlantis #42

sg
I think Aquaman: Sword of Atlantis is generally too maligned as a series. Sure, it felt a little unnecessary, replacing a perfectly good Aquaman, but if you go back and read the series, you'll find a lot of good comics there, both in storytelling and art.

Artist Butch Guice did some tremendous work on the series, including this powerful splash page, which puts the reader almost upside down, trying to orient themselves. The accompanying story title and word balloon only underscores we are in, er, uncharted waters here. Beautifully colored by Dan Brown (presumably not the DaVinci Code author, picking up a few bucks on the side), this makes for one arresting image!

I only hope that Joseph Curry is on an alternate earth some where... Maybe running around with Wally West, Jean-Paul Valley, Charlie Vicker (forgotten Earth GL), Artemis, the Matrix/Linda Danvers Supergirl, and the Martian Manhunter... Because he's just that awesome...

I really like this image, too, which gives us a truly different take on an undersea settlement, with the structures emerging from a vertical surface like barnacles. Cool.
